Hutchison Fuzz Sustainer
Hutchison Fuzz Sustainer
There are so many ways to describe a Big Muff: creamy, crushing, thick, pummeling, deep, saturated, compressed, massive, classic. The Hutchison Fuzz Sustainer is all of those things, for sure, but it's also a little different. Designed around an old, outdated integrated circuit (an LM3900), the Hutchison has its own unique character that sets it apart - it's almost a Big Muff but not exactly.
- Low gain crunch?
- Yep.
- Full-range for use with guitars at any tuning and bass guitars?
- Yep.
- Top-end clarity and note definition even at highest gain?
- Oh yeah.
- Cleans up with the guitar's volume knob?
- Seriously, I wasn't even planning on that being a thing but it works
- Tone control that tames top-end fizz without losing any thick and creamy low end?
- I'm calling it a presence control rather than a tone control, and there's still a hint of scooped mids for a vintage tone without losing its place in the mix.
This is a limited-edition small batch of pedals - I only had 8 LM3900 chips and 8 of these fully polished mini enclosures kicking around. I am not sure if I will be making more Hutchison fuzzes but if I do they will certainly not be the same as this batch.
A note on the enclosures: They are mini with top jacks and will probably not get along well with patch cables with "pancake" jacks. I've also had these enclosures in storage for quite some time and they have some small markings, blemishes, or hairline scratches. Not quite "relic'ed" but they have a bit of worn-in patina.
What do you get when you love fuzz and already have all of the Big Muff tones but are looking for more? Not quite a Big Muff - the Hutchison Fuzz Sustainer.
